Riley Vaults

My niece is a pole vaulter for V.C.U. I watched her vault on Saturday. All of my photos are a bit soft and somewhat underexposed. I was a long way from the action, in a huge field house with standard indoor mixed lightening and I did not feel comfortable setting up my tripod. I would love to go to a practice where I could stand outside, on the field, in afternoon sun and capture the action from close up!

Next time you are faced with a situation where you can't freeze the action or get a steady shot (tripod wouldn't help here as the subject would be a big blur even if everything else wasn't) abandon that thinking and go for serious blur and motion. Go slower and pan with the action. You'll throw some out but at least you expect that going in and the surprises are usually worth it. Welcome to the world of photojournalism style images and thinking.
